Marketing maths for trades, on paper

Where we work

Using the worksheets in Alberta

Alberta's numbers are shaped by two large, expensive metro markets, a long heating season with sudden chinook thaws in the south, and rules on prepaid contracting that matter if you sell away from your shop.

In Alberta, the worksheets are shaped by two big metro markets, a long cold season, and the fact that natural gas heats most homes. Calgary and Edmonton each support enough trades businesses that paid search is competitive and booking rate becomes the main lever. Elsewhere, from Red Deer to Lethbridge to Fort McMurray, smaller markets reward a strong Google profile more than a big ad budget.

The Alberta market

Calgary and Edmonton dominate, with fast-growing neighbours such as Airdrie, St. Albert and Strathcona County. Red Deer, Lethbridge and Wood Buffalo are the main regional centres.

For the job value worksheet, Alberta owners often have a strong new-build and renovation line alongside service work. Suburban growth brings basement developments, garages and additions; older inner-city neighbourhoods bring replacements and upgrades. Those are different job types with different margins, so give them different rows.

In the two big cities, we would also split the geography. A Calgary business based in the southeast can lose most of the profit on a northwest job once travel time is counted. On the ad budget worksheet, that means fewer, tighter target areas rather than "all of Calgary."

Season, climate and the heating mix

Alberta's winters are cold and the heating season is long. In the south, chinook winds can push temperatures up sharply in the middle of winter. According to Statistics Canada, about 76% of Alberta households relied mainly on natural gas for heat in 2023, with about 14% on electricity.

What that means for seasonal weights:

  • Heating and plumbing: heavy from October to March, with emergency calls spiking in cold snaps. These months carry more of the budget than in BC.
  • Outdoor trades: a compressed season. Roofing, fencing, concrete and landscaping crowd into May to September. Expect your weights to look like the Prairie roofing example in the budget guide.
  • Chinook months: a small January or February reserve lets you answer a sudden thaw.

Regulators to know

Alberta's safety codes system covers building, plumbing, gas, electrical and several other disciplines, explained on Alberta.ca. Depending on where you work, permits are issued by an accredited municipality or by the Alberta Safety Codes Authority, while boilers and other pressure equipment sit with ABSA.

Two points have a direct marketing angle:

  • Compulsory certification. Some trades require a journeyperson certificate or registered apprenticeship. The Tradesecrets list shows which ones. If yours is on it, customers may look for that credential on your site.
  • Prepaid contracting. Selling door to door or at home shows and taking deposits before work is done can bring you under Alberta's prepaid contracting rules. Know where you stand before you put a home-show booth on the ROI sheet.

WCB-Alberta covers workers' compensation.

Programs that affect your customers

As of October 2026, we found no province-wide home heating rebate for Alberta on any official site, and no federal Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement. For Alberta homeowners, July 31, 2026 was the last day to apply for the federal oil-to-heat-pump grant.

The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers property-tax-based financing for efficiency and renewable upgrades in participating municipalities. If you work in one of them, it can help a customer say yes to a larger job. Check the CEIP site for the current list before mentioning it, and do not present it as a rebate.

How we would approach Alberta

In Calgary and Edmonton, we would put most of the effort into booking rate and cost per booked job, because clicks are expensive and wasted calls hurt. That usually starts with tracking and fast call-backs before any extra spend. In regional centres, the local SEO checklist and reviews often deliver more for less.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a chinook matter for my ad budget?

A sudden mid-winter thaw in southern Alberta can bring a burst of outdoor and exterior calls in a month your seasonal weights say is quiet. Keep a small reserve in the January and February budget lines so you can respond.

I sell at home shows. Does Alberta's prepaid contractor licence apply to me?

It may. Under the Consumer Protection Act, businesses that solicit or sign contracts away from their usual place of business and take payment before finishing the work need a prepaid contractor licence and must post security. Check with Alberta's consumer protection office.

Are there Alberta home energy rebates I can advertise?

Not province-wide, as far as official Alberta pages showed when this page was checked in October 2026. The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers financing through property taxes, but only in participating municipalities.
