British Columbia is really several markets inside one border. The southwest coast around Vancouver and Victoria has mild, wet winters, while the Interior and the North have colder and longer heating seasons. For the worksheets, that means a trades business serving both should not use one seasonal pattern. Fill in the ad budget worksheet twice, once per climate, and add the results.
The BC market and who buys
Most of the province's population sits in the Lower Mainland and on southern Vancouver Island. Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond and Coquitlam form one dense, competitive market where paid search for common trades is rarely cheap. Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley behave more like a separate market, with more detached homes and acreages. Kelowna and the Okanagan have a strong renovation and new-build economy and a hotter summer.
On the job value sheet, BC owners often find a wider spread than they expect. Strata buildings bring small, repeat service calls; detached homes in the suburbs bring larger replacements and renovations. It is worth splitting those into separate rows.
Seasons, climate and the budget weights
Heating is split more evenly here than on the Prairies. In 2023 about 42% of BC households relied mainly on natural gas for heat and about 36% on electricity, according to Statistics Canada. That means both gas-fitting and heat pump work appear in volume, and they peak at different points in the year.
For outdoor trades on the coast, the season is long but wet. Roofing and exterior painting crews often find spring and late summer the busiest, with autumn rain bringing a rush of leak and drainage calls. In the Interior, the curve is sharper: a short, intense summer and a quiet, cold winter. Weight your months from your own signed jobs, and expect the two regions to look different.
Regulators to know before you advertise
We link and summarise; the regulators' own sites are the authority.
- Technical Safety BC is the body that licenses gas and electrical contractors in the province; its remit also reaches boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration.
- SkilledTradesBC runs Skilled Trades Certification, which now applies to several electrical and mechanical trades, including gasfitters and construction electricians.
- BC Housing Licensing & Consumer Services licenses residential builders and handles home warranty matters.
- WorkSafeBC covers workers' compensation, and Consumer Protection BC handles consumer complaints.
On the local SEO checklist, line 20 asks whether you show the licence numbers your trade requires. In BC, that is often a Technical Safety BC contractor licence.
Programs that change the customer's maths
Rebates do not change your job value, but they change the price your customer pays, which changes your booking rate. As of October 2026:
- The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program is aimed at income-qualified households, with rebates on heat pumps, heat pump water heaters and insulation-type upgrades. New requirements apply to invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026, and some rebates were dropped.
- BC also has a federal Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement, announced June 29, 2026, delivered through BC Hydro and FortisBC for lower-income households.
Programs change often. Confirm details with the administrator before you mention any of them in an ad or on your website.
How we would approach BC
For a Lower Mainland business, we would start with tight geography: drive-time targeting by municipality, because crossing the Port Mann at four o'clock can turn a profitable job into a loss. For an Interior business, we would lean more on the Google profile and reviews, because smaller towns have fewer competitors and the SEO checklist score often matters more than ad spend.
For the method behind all of this, see the guides. Trades.Tools is headquartered in Vancouver, but we are a marketing and business consulting service, not a contractor. To talk through your BC numbers, call, text or email.
Frequently asked questions
Should a Lower Mainland trades business plan its ad budget around winter?
Less than a Prairie business would. Coastal winters are mild and wet, so demand curves are flatter, with rain and drainage work rising in the wet months. Fill in the seasonal weights from your own signed jobs rather than borrowing a national pattern.
Can I mention CleanBC rebates in my ads?
Only with care. The Energy Savings Program rules changed for invoices dated from July 6, 2026, and some rebates were removed. Check the Better Homes BC site before each campaign and say who administers the program.
Does Technical Safety BC affect my marketing?
It licenses gas and electrical contractors, so if your trade needs that licence, customers may look for it. Many owners show their licence number on their website. Technical Safety BC's own site is the authority on what applies to you.
