Marketing maths for trades, on paper

Using the worksheets in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia's market centres on Halifax, its heating mix includes far more oil and heat pumps than most provinces, and efficiency programs change often. All three affect the job value and ad budget worksheets.

In Nova Scotia, the worksheets are shaped by a market that centres on Halifax, a heating mix with far more oil and heat pumps than most provinces, and efficiency programs that have changed several times in the past year. Get the job mix and the program details right, and the method works as it does anywhere else.

The market

Halifax is the main market by a wide margin. Cape Breton Regional Municipality, centred on Sydney, is the second, with Truro, East Hants, West Hants and the Lunenburg area as other centres. Outside Halifax, populations are small and spread along the coast.

For the ad budget worksheet, that means most paid spend will sit in and around Halifax, with smaller, separately tracked budgets elsewhere. For the job value worksheet, coastal and rural jobs often need extra travel time, and older housing stock brings more repair and retrofit work.

Climate and the heating mix

Nova Scotia has a maritime climate: cold, damp and changeable winters that are milder on the coast than inland. According to Statistics Canada, in 2023 about 29% of households used electricity as their main heating energy, about 28% oil and about 6% wood, and heat pumps were the main heating system for about 25% of households.

For HVAC and plumbing businesses, that mix gives the job value sheet several distinct rows: oil system service and replacement, oil-to-heat-pump conversions, heat pump installs and servicing, and backup heating. Each has different margins and seasons. Heating weights are heavy from November to March, with heat pump cooling adding a smaller summer bump. Outdoor trades work a shorter season, with autumn storms often bringing a run of roofing and exterior repair calls.

Regulators to know

Under the province's Technical Safety Act, both gas fitters and oil burner technicians hold licences. If your trade requires a licence, showing it on your site is a line worth scoring on the local SEO checklist.

Programs that change the customer's maths

Nova Scotia's programs have shifted a lot. As of October 2026:

  • Heat pump rebates: Efficiency Nova Scotia lists up to $5,000 for new heat pumps, not for replacements.
  • HomeWarming: no-cost upgrades for low-income households, expanded under a June 2026 federal agreement.
  • Moderate Income Rebate: levels being adjusted after the oil-to-heat-pump program ended.
  • Oil to Heat Pump Affordability: its money was all committed, and it stopped taking new applicants on July 2, 2026.
  • Home Heating System Rebates: closed as of December 31, 2025.

If any old ad or web page still mentions a closed program, take it down. Promoting a program that no longer exists is a fast way to lose trust. Confirm every detail with Efficiency Nova Scotia before using it.

A quick worksheet adjustment for Halifax

An invented Halifax HVAC business might find, once it fills in the job value sheet, that oil-to-heat-pump conversions were its most profitable row last year, partly on the back of a program that has now closed to new applicants. That changes the plan. The booking rate it achieved with the program will probably not repeat, so the ad budget worksheet should use a lower, more cautious rate for conversion leads until real numbers come in. Writing that assumption down, in pencil, is exactly the discipline the sheets are for.

How we would approach Nova Scotia

We would start with the job value sheet, splitting oil, conversion and heat pump work, because their margins and lead costs differ widely. Then we would audit every page and ad for out-of-date program claims. After that, the usual order: tracking, a seasonal budget weighted for a long, damp winter, and the local SEO checklist for markets outside Halifax.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still advertise heat pump rebates in Nova Scotia?

Efficiency Nova Scotia lists rebates of up to $5,000 for new heat pumps as of October 2026, but not for replacing an existing heat pump. Several other programs have closed or changed, so check before every campaign.

Is general contracting licensed in Nova Scotia?

General construction is not a regulated trade there, but electrical and plumbing are compulsory certified trades, and gas fitters and oil burner technicians are licensed. The Technical Safety Division and the Apprenticeship Agency are the places to check.

How should I treat Cape Breton jobs on the worksheets?

As a separate market. If you are based in Halifax, add travel time to labour on the job value worksheet, and give Cape Breton its own budget line and tracking.
