Ontario is the biggest trades market in Canada, and in the Greater Toronto Area the competition for every click is intense. That makes the worksheets more valuable here, not less. When clicks are costly, a small gap in booking rate or a misjudged lead ceiling can turn a profitable campaign into a loss. Ontario also has licensing rules that restrict who may advertise some kinds of work.
The Ontario market
Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan form one very large, crowded market. Ottawa, Hamilton and London are large markets in their own right, and Northern Ontario is a world apart: fewer people, longer distances and much colder winters.
For the job value worksheet, GTA owners often find their mix includes condo and townhouse work with small, frequent jobs alongside detached-home replacements and renovations. Splitting those rows shows which deserve paid advertising and which are better won through property managers and referrals.
For the ad budget worksheet, geography matters enormously. Highway traffic means a job thirty kilometres away can cost an hour each way. We would target by drive time and job type rather than city name.
Climate and the heating mix
Southern Ontario's winters are cold but moderated near the Great Lakes; the North has a longer, colder heating season. In 2023, about 58% of Ontario households relied mainly on natural gas for heat, 18% on electricity and 4% on propane, according to Statistics Canada.
That propane share is small provincially but concentrated in rural areas outside the gas network. A rural HVAC or plumbing business may find propane work is a large row on its job value sheet even if it is rare in the city.
Seasonal weights in the south are less extreme than on the Prairies. Heating and plumbing peak from November to March, cooling work rises in June to August, and outdoor trades run from April to October. In the North, shift everything toward a shorter summer.
Regulators to know before you advertise
Ontario has more than one safety authority, and two of them affect marketing directly.
- TSSA oversees fuels, boilers and pressure vessels and other equipment. Fuels work is restricted to contractors registered with TSSA, and the technicians doing it must hold gas certificates.
- ESA covers electrical safety. Work done for others requires a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and ESA says only licensed contractors may bid on or advertise electrical work. If you advertise electrical services, your licence matters to your marketing.
- HCRA licenses new-home builders and vendors.
- WSIB covers workplace insurance, and Skilled Trades Ontario handles trade certification.
On the local SEO checklist, showing your ESA licence or TSSA registration where customers expect it is a line worth scoring honestly.
Programs that change what customers pay
As of October 2026:
- Home Renovation Savings Program, run by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with provincial support, offers rebates on single upgrades such as cold-climate air source heat pumps (up to $7,500) and ground source systems (up to $12,000), or bundled upgrades after a home energy assessment.
- Energy Affordability Program provides free upgrades for income-eligible households, including a time-limited heat pump stream for oil-heated homes.
Ontario had no federal CGHAP agreement as of October 22, 2026. Confirm every program detail with the administrator before using it in an ad.
How we would approach Ontario
In the GTA, we would start with the ROI worksheet and booking rate, because every point of booking rate is worth real money when clicks are expensive. Then tight geography and separate campaigns by job value. In smaller cities and the North, the local SEO checklist and reviews usually come first.
Trades.Tools is a marketing and business consulting service, not a contractor, and this page is not regulatory advice. For Ontario-specific help, call, text or email.
Frequently asked questions
Can any business advertise electrical work in Ontario?
No. The Electrical Safety Authority restricts bidding on and advertising electrical work for others to Licensed Electrical Contractors. If electrical work appears in your ads or on your website, check ESA's rules first.
Why do GTA trades businesses need the ROI worksheet more than others?
Because cost per click is high, small differences in booking rate decide whether ads make or lose money. A business that books one lead in five instead of one in three can see its cost per job rise by two thirds.
Are Ontario's Home Renovation Savings rebates still open?
As of October 22, 2026, official pages showed no closure notice. Check Save on Energy's site before every campaign, because amounts and eligibility can change.
